In 1985 the Philadelphia police dropped bombs from a helicopter onto a city block, killing eleven people – five of them children. It’s bananas how that story is so forgotten today. Anyway, that’s how the state responds to certain kinds of political actors inside the imperial core.
Meanwhile, political activism by other – let’s say paler – people largely goes unmolested. They and their actions – peaceful protest – pose no real threat. So this song is about who is allowed to agitate in America and who is not, and how that latter group gets forgotten.
B&B is kind of a work song, so I got an accordion (played by Dmitry Karev) in there. It really sings in the second verse. The drum under the solo is an homage to Joe Morello, who played on Dave Brubeck’s Take Five. I didn’t technically play the e-piano solo at the end; I just scat-sang it into a microphone and then asked my computer to transcribe it, and then I turned that transcription into a keyboard part. I feel like that’s cheating.
lyrics
So let them try
They’ll swallow us up
We're the swarm and the hive
Swallow us down like the pill
They'll choke upon
We're the way and the will
Sing us the song of the brave and blond
Sing us to sweeten our tears
Sing us of pride and the fight of the night
The fortune that favors the brave
Well we won't go where we're told
May 85
Police dropping bombs on the kids from the sky
Five children died in their homes
Then we buried it deep in a memory hole
Sing us the song of the brave and blond
Sing us to sweeten our tears
Sing us of pride and the fight of the night
The fortune that favors the brave
