Along the same lines, “Teenage” is another story of a young person having a hard time. The speaker of the verses, from the remove of time, somehow has fondness for the past that obscures all the struggles the past contained.
Nostalgia is a trick, the speaker knows, because he remembers how haggard it could get back then, how casual kids could be about each other’s troubles, and how one’s own troubles could feel insurmountable at times. I know I had at times been the kid with trouble and the kid way too casual about others. The speaker of the chorus is the kind of friend I wish I had been.
Colin Holter used to play bass in our band, and he sings the harmony here, which to me makes the song, which is really just one discussion across three decades.
