Saw You at the Party

from Ringo by Late-Night Delivery

about

This is my favorite of all my rock songs. It’s a snapshot of a guy who wildly overreacts to something innocuous said by his ex or his crush or whoever. Along with the music, he gets more and more grandiose, thinking there’s something meaningful about “you called me baby.”

I was probably that guy once, though never this guy specifically.

The music slaps. In college I was sometimes a hired hand for other bands, and a colleague in one of them once remarked, kind of cattily, that a lot of my songs have just two chords. The verse of this song has just two chords, and I like it just fine.

Christian had the idea for the buildup and the false start into the heavier parts in the song, and I think it brings all the charm to the arrangement. It creates the tension that makes the song’s big finish work, and it gives the album an ending that matches in energy its opener in “Dear Moderation.”

lyrics

Woke up
Five AM
Smelling like vomit
Smelling like sin

And the phone was ringing
And my head was spinning
So I creaked into the speaker with a friend on the other end saying
What the hell, dude?

He said, Man what happened last night
With the drinking and the fist fight
I was worried about you

I said I don't know what I was thinking
What could explain my drinking
But I was worried too
And my thoughts turned to you

When I saw you at the party and you called me baby
And I took so many shots
I don't know how long
I can hold on to you

I was in the basement talking with some kids from the day
When you strolled in off the pavement
Sized me up and then walked away

And my arms felt weak
And I shook my knees
I gathered up my courage and met you by your cabriolet

When I saw you at the party and you called me baby
And I took so many shots
I don't know how long
I can hold on to you

What a thing to say to a boy
Have to admit I was mildly annoyed
But I was glad I saw you at the party
