I got Weezer’s Pinkerton album on CD for my 13th birthday. I loved it. I thought it was insightful and tender. I didn’t really get its neurosis and gross power dynamics until I was older, so now it’s kind of spoiled for me. (The music still goes.)
“Pixy” is a story about a young woman, but moreover it’s about how her story can be told with or without a paternalistic framing, which happens to sound a bit like the first few Weezer albums. One exception is the solo, which I played on keyboard (Arturia Microfreak) since I can’t shred like Rivers Cuomo. That gave me the excuse to layer a bunch more synths in the chorus, which I guess is more Clarity-era Jimmy Eat World than Weezer.
Anyway, there’s danger in growing up. A lot of things that feel attractive to young people can conceal sharp edges. What you, as an adult, do with that knowledge is up to you.
lyrics
You're new and you're bold
You're 15 and scared
You're learning to drive
There’s death everywhere
You’re sneaking a smoke
You're taking a shot
You’re talking with boys
And turning down pot
You’re dressed to the nines
There’s kegs in the back
There’s guys on the porch
And hands on your ass
You’re calling your dad
You lie through your teeth
You did nothing wrong
You're scared and fifteen
My my what a clever smile on such a stupid girl
You smell like vodka
Who has got you sinking in the swirl
Broken promise
Promiscuity
And at breakfast
You're not what you seem
Fifteen, a loaded gun
Floating on pixy dust
Eyes open
Now they're open wide
What could you decide?
You’re taking a break
You needed it bad
It follows you ‘round
Like a pain in the neck
It’s not your fault
The slings and the arrows
The last syllable
You’re fifteen and scared
