about
I wanted to write a pretty song with a catchy chorus, but to also have that pretty, catchy chorus include a line about jars of urine. By this measurement, I totally nailed it.
There are two very different protagonists in this song, one of whom is a Confederate soldier so don’t feel too bad for him, but they’re still both dumb young men who fool themselves. When they say “there’s so much innocence / how could you waste that on me”, they are very, very wrong on a bunch of levels. I really worry that my lyrics will make me seem awful if taken literally or personally or whatever. Even when I’m singing it and using “I” pronouns, it’s almost never me who is the speaker in these songs, and even more often I think the speaker is wrong.
This song dates back to one day in 2007, fully formed in one sitting, which is not common for me, so I’m extra fond of it. Feels less like my song, just a song I have, if you get the difference.
lyrics
Fixing to drink yourself blind
And I'm not changing your mind
I'll look your dad in the eye
I'm a dependable guy
You go changing your clothes
And breath mints so nobody knows
You've got that look in your eye
I won't go losing my mind
I won't jar up my urine
I won't cheat and steal
I know that it's not a big deal how you shine like a firefly
You taste to me like tangerines
There's so much innocence
How could you waste that on me?
I'm conscripted and bored
Fighting the civil war
You're a dandy young sweet
Bringing me sweet tea
I promise to write
And I'll try real hard not to die
Your plantation's on fire
I won't go losing my mind
I won't jar up my urine
I won't cheat and steal
I know that it's not a big deal how you shine like a firefly
You taste to me like tangerines
There's so much innocence
How could you waste that on me?
