about
I swear to god, I never knew that the “Prudence” in the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” was a person (specifically Prudence Farrow, Mia’s sister). I really thought John Lennon wrote a song to the abstract concept of prudence, like a conversational, direct address to, like, the virtue of being cautious.
I wrote “Dear Mod” when I was 24, not very prudent, not very moderate in my behavior. I was a bit isolated from my friends, especially my childhood friends – the ones with whom I played in bands. They had moved away, started big careers and made new friends, having their own new struggles and victories (“Into the city / poisoned and pretty”), all while I hung out in my mom’s basement, doing nothing much except getting pretty good at Team Fortress 2.
It’s really important to me that Christian sang the line about no one teaching us guitars (though actually he did take lessons, the poser). He’d been my main musical collaborator for more than a decade at that point, and his performance and greater influence shape the whole song, which ultimately I guess is just about when the boys are back in town.
lyrics
Dear moderation
It's me
I'm sorry I haven't wrote
When you shoved it down my throat
I got turned off
Dear moderation
Our friends all scattered like the ash
They were drumming on the dash
When they drove away
Into the city
Poisoned and pretty
You cry on the phone
In debt but not alone
You're on the rebound
Ripped from the wet ground
I remember you in 1992
Well it's just something that we dreamed up when we were young
Dear moderation
As children no one ever taught us how to play guitars
We just played
Well we couldn't stay long and I left my phone in the car
Then we drove to the sticks with a case of beer for the party
As the parties faded we hit clubs
And the clubs hit back
I remember in November all the pretty lights
Before they went bLack
And the pain of the morning after
And the slow disaster
And then a couple of you fade from view
Dear moderation
I wonder
If you've got the time
I'm seeing friends of mine
Would you stay away?
Into the city
Poisoned and pretty
You cry on the phone
In debt but not alone
You're on the rebound
Ripped from the wet ground
I remember you in 1992
Well it's just something that we dreamed up when we were young
